model
A model is a smaller copy of something, like a toy airplane or a person who poses for artists. People also say model to mean a good example to copy, or a simple picture of how something works in the world.
What a model may hear
- machine learning weights AI engineering
- treat it as a trained neural network file that generates text, images, or predictions
- data schema databases and web frameworks
- assume a structured definition of tables, fields, and relationships in code
- statistical model science and analytics
- apply formulas, distributions, or regression equations to data
- simulation model engineering and economics
- run computational experiments to forecast behavior of systems
- MVC component software architecture
- expect a layer that handles business logic separate from views and controllers
Where people and models part ways
“Make me a model of a house”
Meant: draw or describe a house for me
May be taken as: generate a 3D data structure, CAD file, or machine learning training set
Say instead: “Describe what a typical house looks like, or draw me a picture of a house”
“Is this a good model?”
Meant: is this a good example to follow?
May be taken as: evaluate accuracy, loss metrics, or training data quality
Say instead: “Is this person or plan a good example to follow?”
“Build a model for my business”
Meant: create a plan or forecast
May be taken as: train a predictive algorithm or design a database schema
Say instead: “Help me build a financial forecast or business plan with projections”
“Show me the model”
Meant: show me the diagram or explanation
May be taken as: output code weights, API endpoints, or raw parameter files
Say instead: “Show me the diagram or written explanation of how this works”
Tips
- Say 'machine learning model' or 'AI model' when you mean the trained system, not just 'model'
- Say 'scale model' or 'physical model' when you mean a small copy of an object
- Say 'role model' or 'good example' when you mean a person to imitate
- Say 'data model' or 'database model' when you mean how information is organized
- Ask 'in plain language' after using 'model' to force a non-technical answer
Often confused with
- module
- a code component, not a copy or example
- mode
- a setting or way of operating, not a representation
- modal
- a popup window or statistical distribution type
- modem
- a network hardware device
- modality
- a type of input like text, image, or sound
